EPISODE LXXXIV - CHUMMING FOR PORK RINDS

Mr. Jeffy had his crew running a thorough diagnostic of all engineering functions, though in truth he wasn't sure what he was looking for. His printouts said that they had experienced a power surge shortly after powering down the RF drives at approximately the same moment the bridge was experiencing their problems. Ensign Hibbard approached, his expression giving away that he had unpleasant news.

"It seems as though the Origami Drive did, in fact activate, Mr. Jeffy."

"But...for...how...long", Jeffy inquired dramatically.

"Er...", Hibbard muttered, "about thirty seconds, sir."

Jeffy nodded, rubbing the coarse stubble on his chin.  "I don't see how we could have missed that, Ensign", he said thoughtfully.  "Had the RF Drive shut down by that time?"

Hibbard checked his readouts.  "Negative, sir, it appears that it was still functioning."

Jeffy took the readings from the junior officer and ran down the list.  "Ensign", he said quizzically, "you've studied quite a bit of neo-servo quantum physics, haven't you?"

Hibbard nodded.  "Yes sir, in fact I was president of the Non-repetetive Integers Club in college", he said enthusiastically.

"Good", Jeffy replied, "then why don't you do some theoretic work ups on the exponential possibilities in regards to dual drive potential?"

Hibbard looked at Jeffy stunned.  "Sir?"

Jeffy sighed in frustration.  "Figure out what happens when the Origami and RF drives work simultaneously."

"But they were never designed for that, sir", Hibbard argued.

"Regardless Ensign", Jeffy replied in his most stern voice, "I need those figures.  And quickly", he added, flexing his rank.

"Aye aye, sir", Hibbard stammered, rendering a smart salute.  As the ensign returned to his station, Jeffy keyed his communicator.

"Engineering to Bridge."

Reed responded quickly.  "Transmit engineering."

"Hey pal, we may have a little problem down here."

"A little problem!", Reed echoed from the bridge.

"Yeah buddy", Jeffy explained, "I think we might have had both hyper drives going at the same time."

"What does that mean exactly, Mr. Jeffy?", Reed asked, trying to contain his agitation.

"Oh, well, it means that the RF drive and the Origami Drive were going at the same ti..."

"In terms of our present situation, I mean", Reed interrupted.

Mr. Jeffy scratched his head.  "Geez pal, I really don't know."

"Well could you find out?"

"Sure Mark", Jeffy replied agreeably, "no sweat."
